Thorley Hill Primary School

Physical Education and Sport

Physical Education and sport at Thorley Hill are considered to be a highly important part of our children’s learning.

The school’s core values of...

Respect, Believe, Achieve

...are embedded into PE and sport and we endeavour to meet these at all times during P.E. lessons, sporting competitions and extra-curricular activities.
Our school is registered with School Games

We are very proud to announce that for the last 5 years we were accredited with the School Games Gold Award and we continue to hold this as we now aim for Platinum.

The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games are made up of three levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national event for the most talented young people in the UK:

  • Intra-school (Level 1) - sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition;
  • Inter-school (Level 2) - individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions;
  • School Games Festivals (Level 3) – the county/area stage multi-sport School Games Festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition.

Our school is well resourced for P.E. and sport with an indoor hall space, large playground and field.  A range of indoor and outdoor P.E. and games activities are taught to every class for between ninety and one hundred and twenty minutes per week.  Children from Year Three complete at least half a term of swimming lessons every year, taught by qualified swimming teachers at Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre, to ensure that they leave our school able to confidently swim at least twenty-five metres.

We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular clubs (over 20 a week) and activities including football, netball, dodge ball, cheerleading, modern dance and street dance.  We also offer the more unusual activities such as archery, fencing and UV Dodgeball.  Please look at our extra-curricular activities page in our Learning section for more information.

Thorley Hill is also part of the Bishop’s Stortford School Games Partnership. This offers staff training and competitions for the pupils in a range of sports and activities.
